Den Bryce Canyon hat man auch als die stille Stadt bezeichnet. Gleicht er doch mit seinen hunderten von Felsnadeln der Skyline einer Großstadt. Aber es gibt noch mehr Parallelen.

Während in anderen National Parks die besonders sehenswerten Stellen oft Meilen auseinanderliegen, ist im Bryce Canyon das Naturschauspiel auf der Fläche einer kleinen Stadt verdichtet. Dafür bietet sich hier das Panorama eines Farb- und Formenrausches, der an das Nachtleben einer Großstadt erinnern mag.

Wie in die Hochhausschluchten der Metropolen kann man hier in die engen Täler eintauchen, die das Wasser aus dem Gestein gewaschen hat. Einige der Schluchten tragen sogar die Landmarken der Großstadt: Wall Street, Tower Bridge, Mormon Temple.

Andere Stellen heißen Ort der Inspiration, Feenland, Garten der Königin, Ort des Sonnenaufgangs und Sonnenuntergangs. Die Farben und Formen des Bryce Canyons scheinen die Gedanken der Menschen zu allen Zeiten inspiriert zu haben.

Und nun gibt es dazu den Alexandrinischen Zusatz: wenn es schief geht, wird es zum ungünstigsten Zeitpunkt schief gehen. Es wird in tausend Meilen Umkreis niemanden geben, der helfen kann.
Aber wenn alles derart schief geht, erinnere Dich an das erste A-Prinzip: wenn sonst niemand es tun kann, tue es selbst!

Dramatische Szene am Rande des Bryce Canyons. Ein deutscher Urlauber droht, sich in den Abgrund zu stürzen. Nichts kann ihn aufhalten. Was war passiert ?
Hier sollte einer der Höhepunkte des Urlaubs sein. Seit ich vor Jahren die ersten Bilder aus dem Bryce Canyon sah, hatte ich diesem Augenblick entgegengefiebert. Und dann, in diesem entscheidenden Augenblick der Weltgeschichte, klemmt sich der Spiegel meiner Kamera fest. Nichts geht mehr.

Mit der Verzweifelung kämpfend vermute ich leere Batterien und stürze an den nächsten Kiosk, um die besten Batterien zu erstehen, die Geld kaufen kann. Eingelegt, nichts passiert.

Es ist nichts zu machen, alle tröstenden Worte gleiten an mir ab. Wo soll ich mir jetzt hier im Niemandsland auch schon eine neue Kamera kaufen können ?

Nun gilt es Ruhe zu bewahren und auf die jahrelange Ausbildung zu bauen. Eine gründliche und methodische Untersuchung des Falles wird angeordnet. Ein Einblick in die Spiegelkammer bringt erste konkrete Hinweise. Mehrere Auslösungen bestätigen die Diagnose.

Nun stellt sich die Frage: wo setzt man am besten den Schnitt an, ohne das umliegende Gewebe zu stark zu schädigen ? Unter den primitiven Bedingungen der Wildnis entschließe ich mich schließlich zu einem beherzten Schritt. Komplikationen bleiben aus, der Patient ist in der Lage, unmittelbar nach der Operation wieder seine Arbeit aufzunehmen. Ein mulmiges Gefühl in der Bauchgegend bleibt zurück: was, wenn es zu einem Rückfall kommt ?

This was planned to be one of the trips highlights. Since I saw the first pictures of the Bryce Canyon years ago I feverishly awaited this moment. And then, in this crucial point of world history, the mirror of my camera jammed. Nothing moves.

In despair I assume empty batteries and rush towards the next kiosk to buy the best batteries money can buy. Inserted, nothing happens. It can't be helped, all comforting words slip around me. Where in this no mans land I shall buy a new camera ?

Now professional calmness is demanded - remember the yearlong training. A thorough and methodical research of the case is ordered. Insight in the mirror chamber brings the first tangible clues. Several activations confirm the diagnosis. Now it is the question where to put the first cut without putting to much damage to the surrounding tissue ?

Under the primitive conditions of the wilderness I decide for a radical step. Complications do not take place and the patient is able to continue her work right after the operation. A funny feeling in the stomach remains: what if there is a relapse ?
